A Football Player Leaves Edinburgh High School After Racial Harassment From Teammates

A sophomore football player recently left Edinburgh High School after experiencing racial harassment from his teammates, sparking concern and discussion across the small Indiana town.
Nestled 40 minutes south of Indianapolis along I-65, Edinburgh has long taken pride in its school district, but recent events have cast a shadow over the community’s image.
The family, who moved to Edinburgh this year, had hoped for a fresh start.
“He felt like everything was going perfectly, and he was super excited about being on the football team,” the mother .
However, less than two months into the school year, the student faced a shocking wave of racial harassment.
He received a video of two teammates using racial slurs and a Snapchat message warning him not to attend practice because some players were planning to “jump” him.
The harassment quickly escalated. The homecoming football game was canceled, and both school authorities and police launched investigations.
Interim Superintendent Jim Halik emphasized the school’s stance, stating,
“We have zero tolerance on any harassment. It doesn’t matter what kind or what it is.”
The situation has deeply affected the student and his family. The mother described her son as experiencing anxiety and nausea, blaming himself for the cancellation of the homecoming game.
“He feels sorry for the kids that did this to him,” she said.
“He feels like all of this is his fault.”
Despite the family’s desire for him to remain in Edinburgh, he has since transitioned to online classes.
The school disciplined the students involved, suspending them for ten days and removing them from the football team.
Police Chief Doyne Little confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
While the family hopes for resolution, they express frustration at the slow response and perceived indifference from some community members.
Community reactions have been mixed. Some, like local resident Shayna Wheeler, criticized the town’s broader culture, stating,
“Generational thinking in this town breeds racial disease… Parents are pulling kids out of Edinburgh left and right (regardless of race) and we wonder why.”
Others defended the school’s handling of the incident, noting that prior reports indicate the video originated as a joke among friends before the student joined the school and emphasizing that the school took immediate action once the harassment was reported.
The incident has ignited a larger conversation about race, accountability, and community responsibility. Wheeler added,
“This caused attention… it was an issue, and it is not the fault of the Black family. It’s ours as a community. Together.”
As the investigation continues, Edinburgh faces questions about how it can protect all students from harassment, foster inclusivity, and ensure that new families feel welcome.
For the student and his family, the ordeal has meant a difficult transition and the painful decision to leave a school they had once eagerly joined.
