Bethune Middle School Coach Warns Player, Cam: ‘Stay in Football or You’ll Be Dead or in Jail Within Three Years’

The video of Jerald Hatchett, a Decatur coach, urging player Cam to stay in football, warning of consequences, has made grand waves online.

In Decatur, Georgia, a powerful moment between a coach and a young player has caught the attention of thousands online.

Jerald Hatchett, a 56-year-old volunteer coach at Bethune Middle School, was recorded giving a heartfelt speech to a player named Cam during practice, who was considering quitting the football team.

Hatchett isn’t even the official head coach there; is the head coach, but he shows up to help because he believes in these young players.

Currently, the video is spreading rapidly on social media, and his raw words have moved people across the internet. The video has sparked emotional reactions and calls for more mentors like him.

Hatchett didn’t hold back, as seen in the video. He told Cam that quitting the team meant giving up on everyone who cares about him, saying:

You’re quitting on your mama, you’re quitting on yourself, you’re quitting on God, you’re quitting on your grandma, and everybody else that’s around you.

He said Cam could do more good on the field than out on the streets.

With a heavy heart, he warned that if Cam walked away, he’d likely end up dead or in jail within three years, before he even turned 20, saying:

And I’m telling you now, from the bottom of my heart, if you leave this damn field, son, within three years, I’m gonna have to come see you.
Either in the grave, or in fucking jail. And that’s real talk. In less than three years.

“That’s where you’re headed,” Hatchett said, pointing out that life takes discipline.

He shared his own story, admitting that he had made mistakes, but said that going to school and joining the Army were the best things he had ever done.

It takes discipline to live this life. I’m 56 years old. And I’m not gonna tell you that that ain’t do nothing dumb.

But the greatest thing I ever did was to Go to school and in the motherfucking army.

It wasn’t just tough talk, though. Hatchett looked Cam in the eyes and said,

I’m rooting for you. Man, I pray for you every night.

He told Cam he prays for him more than any other kid on the team because he sees so much potential in him.

“You got so much in you,” he said. “Can’t lose you, Cam.”

His words were raw, straight from the heart, and you could tell he meant every single one.

By the end, Cam started taking off his shirt to put on his practice gear, a sign he might stay.

Soon after the video went viral, the internet has been buzzing with love for Hatchett’s words. Many see him as a father figure, especially for kids who don’t have one at home.

There was one negative comment from _bobroberts3, who doubted the impact and made a grim remark about violence. But the positivity drowned it out.

A local mom, Clinetta_Silver, called Hatchett “the best,” saying he and his wife, Juanita, love kids, saying:

Mr. Jerald is the best! 💯 I love him and his wife Mrs. Juanita. They genuinely love kids and people in general.

Likewise, she even said Hatchett’s just as tough on her 6-year-old son, “He is just as hard on a 6 year old too. Trust me my son knows 😭 He is truly a gem in Decatur, GA!!!!“

When she called Hatchett to tell him the video was blowing up online, he had no idea it was even recorded.

To know Mr. Jerald is such a pleasure! I called him this morning and said you going viral on ig 😂😂😂. He said mannn I didn’t even know someone was recording 😭😭.

A user named jdizigner wrote, “He feeling them words. The young men want to loved and cared for too.”

Others, like brian_deaville, replied, “need more like this coach,” while alphaworrior said, “us older dudes gotta show these young men more love, most of them didn’t have dads around so they emotionally compromised.”
