The Moorabbin Bowling Club is mourning the sudden and unexpected death of Richard Rayner, who passed away on Saturday night, November 29, 2026.

Richard, who had just celebrated his 58th birthday last month, was a cherished member of the club and a beloved figure in the local community.

Richard’s passion for the sport of bowls quickly made him a familiar and respected presence at the club.

Introduced to the club last season by his best mate, Paul Taberner, he instantly became an integral part of the community.

Richard joined Tuesday night games with friends Roy and Ryan, forming a formidable team affectionately nicknamed the “3 R’s” under the guidance of skipper Bill Fiddler.

This year, Richard expanded his involvement by joining the Saturday pennant team.

In a cruel twist of fate, he played a remarkable game just this past Saturday, celebrating a team victory with his teammates over a beer.

That joyful moment would tragically be the last time friends and fellow club members enjoyed his company.

Fellow club members have expressed their shock and grief, recalling his friendly nature and eagerness to learn, which enriched the club experience for all.

The Moorabbin Bowling Club extends its deepest condolences to Richard’s wife, Di, and their daughters, Ashleigh, Charlotte, and Paige.

The club expressed its sorrow in a heartfelt tribute, saying,

“Richard was the very definition of a great clubman. His presence on the greens and in the club will be sorely missed by all who knew him. RIP Rich — gone too soon.”

Members of the broader bowling community, including St Kilda Bowls Club, have also shared their condolences, highlighting the widespread impact of Richard’s sudden passing.

His family, friends, and fellow club members are left to mourn the loss of a man gone far too soon.
