Al Hurtado, the athletic director of College Park High School, passed away in the morning on October 28, 2026.
He was a teacher from 1965 and coached football and basketball till 2002.
Al Hurtado has been synonymous with College Park High School for decades. His deep commitment to the school began in 1965 when he first joined as a teacher.
Moreover, his impact quickly grew as he took on many vital roles.
He was a dedicated Football and Basketball Coach, a leader as the school’s Athletic Director, and an administrator who served as Vice-Principal.
His dedication to CPHS was further recognized through his work on the .
Even after his official duties, Al Hurtado remained a cherished storyteller and a proud Falcon. He often shared his rich experiences and memories at school events, including the Falcon Foundation Hall of Fame banquet.
He left a lasting and positive mark on the entire College Park community through his teaching, coaching, and leadership.
Coach Hurtado was a wonderful man! He was all about character, kindness, and respect. We were so fortunate to have him in our lives.

The College Park community is mourning the tragic passing of beloved Coach Al Hurtado.
Ralph DeVries shared the sad news in the College Park 1969 Facebook group, leaving a profound sense of loss among all who knew him.

He was a wonderful man who defined himself through his unwavering character, natural kindness, and deep respect for everyone he encountered.
He lived his life shaping not only athletes but the character of the young people he mentored.
His legacy is one of integrity and compassion, and generations of students, players, and colleagues will well remember him.
Coach Hurtado now joins his fellow coach and friend, Ted Abbott, a popular and longtime figure who spent more than four decades coaching football and baseball at College Park.
Together, they represented a golden era of mentorship and dedication to the school.
Abbott had back-to-back unbeaten football teams at College Park and was the first baseball coach at Northgate, where the field is named in his honor. He was inducted into the College Park Hall of Fame in February, an event that was attended by 300 to 400 of his former players.
Furthermore, words cannot fully capture the void left by Coach Hurtado’s passing.
His memory of the positive influence he had and the countless lives he touched will forever be a cherished part of the College Park spirit.
