Eastlake High School Football Coach Ruben Rodriguez was arrested for domestic violence charges on Sunday, according to jail records.

The football coach was arrested on suspicion of assault of a close family/household member. According to an affidavit, the victim was his girlfriend.

Rodriguez impeded breath or circulation by choking his girlfriend, which is a serious criminal offence in Texas.

His partner told the police that the High School Coach also pulled her, dragged her, and punched her, by saying, “take it.” Before choking her, Rodriguez also used his thumb to push her eyes.

Coach Is Already Released

Despite the offense being serious under Texas law, the Eastlake Coach was released from the El Paso County Jail on the day of the arrest after posting a $40,000 bond.

The incident took place at night when Rodriguez and his partner had an argument. When the coach got off after assaulting, his girlfriend rang 911 instantly.

The affidavit also suggests that the victim has red eyes and blood on some parts of her body.

After getting arrested and asked about the domestic violence details, Rodriguez said he was asleep and knew nothing about the incident.

Socorro Independent School District has now released a statement acknowledging the arrest but declined to comment on personnel matters, stating that appropriate steps are being taken in line with district policy.

“Socorro ISD is aware of the arrest of an employee. The district does not comment on personnel matters. Appropriate steps are being taken in accordance with district policy, and we remain focused on supporting our students and schools.”

Rodriguez, the football head coach of Eastlake High School, a part of the Socorro Independent School District (SISD) in El Paso County, Texas, has spent over six years in this position.

The head coach also led the Falcons to a District 1-6A title last year. During the time of his arrest, the Falcons were 3-2 overall and 1-0 in district play.

The Falcons’ next opponent is the El Paso Eastwood Troopers, who have a district record of 1-0 and an Overall record of 4-1.

Although the SSID has yet to decide the future of the coach, he will most probably be relieved of his duty. If convicted, it could disqualify him from working in public education as well.
