Former Goshen Standout Athlete Stephen Edward “Steve” Berry Dies at 63, Leaving His Wife and 5 Children

Stephen Edward Berry, a former student athlete from Goshen Central Schools, passed away peacefully at the age of 63 on January 12, 2026, with his wife of 31 years by his side.

He touched countless lives with his kind spirit, carefree attitude, and athletic expertise.

Stephen Edward “Steve” Berry’s life was deeply rooted in his hometown pride and the simple joys of competition and hard work.

He graduated from Goshen Central Schools, where he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. His baseball talent was exceptional, earning him attention from the New York Yankees and a draft opportunity.

However, he continued his baseball career at New England College, where he achieved All-American honors.

After college, he competed in fast-pitch softball, traveling to World Championships in Canada, and remained an avid golfer and sports enthusiast.

In 1985, Steve joined Wallace and Berry Insurance in Goshen and Monroe, working side-by-side with his father. He was a familiar and trusted figure in the local business community for 35 years.

Stephen Edward Berry was a devoted father, loving husband, and cherished friend who passed away peacefully at the age of 63.

He left behind a legacy of kindness, enthusiasm, and deep familial love.

Stephen Edward Berry, the son of the late Edward (Ted) and Mary Lee Berry, was born on July 1, 1962, in Middletown, New York.

His parents raised him in a close-knit family alongside his sister, Gayle Lerch. They instilled in him the values of loyalty, joy, and commitment that would define his life.

Steve’s journey was one of passion and connection.

He married the love of his life, Jennifer, in 1994, and built a beautiful family, raising five children, Alexa, Gillian, Jack, Corey, and Daniel Berry.

As a father, he found his greatest purpose, and his children brought him joy. He was a constant hands-on presence in their lives.

The former athlete seamlessly blended his own athletic expertise and carefree spirit with unwavering support for their pursuits. His enthusiastic voice was a fixture of encouragement, and his children were his proudest accomplishment.

Within the last two weeks, we have lost to GREAT GLADIATORS and alumni of our football family. May my good friend Steven Berry RIP! Sure will miss his Cheshire grin! So many fond memories,,, please keep his family and his brother Ronnie in your prayers.

Steve is survived by his beloved wife, Jennifer Berry; five children; brother, Ronald (Georgie) Berry; sister-in-law, Julie (Darren) Schwartz; and many nieces and nephews.

On the other hand, he was predeceased by his parents, Ted and Mary Lee Berry, and his sister, Gayle Lerch.

Steve will be remembered for his kind spirit, easygoing smile, and genuine care. He touched many lives with his warmth and left an indelible mark on his community and friends.

The Berry family invited friends and family to celebrate Stephen’s remarkable life on Sunday, January 18, 2026. They will hold a visitation from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with a service following at 1:00 p.m., at Donovan Funeral Home, 82 South Church Street, Goshen, NY 10924.

Stephen Edward “Steve” Berry will be profoundly missed. May he rest in eternal peace.
