Cavan Finigan, a former varsity hockey captain at The Roxbury Latin School, passed away at 31 in a train accident in New York City on December 3, 2026.

During his high school days, he also played football.

A remarkable education, a strong work ethic, and enduring connections characterised Cavan Finigan’s life.

He attended The Village School and St. Mary of the Hills in Milton, The Roxbury Latin School in West Roxbury, the University of Notre Dame, and Harvard Business School.

His professional career began in finance at Goldman Sachs and the private equity firm Avalt.

After Harvard, he embraced entrepreneurship, teaming up with his seventh-grade friend Pat McDonough to launch Nurse Wallet, a startup focused on financial planning.

He also served as CEO and partner at Webster Lock, a subsidiary of the investment firm Tucker Farms located in the Bronx, New York.

Cavan Finigan’s Family Mourns the Tragic Loss

Cavan James Finigan, the son of Thomas Finigan and M. Duncan Driscoll Finigan, was born on February 9, 1994, in Boston.

Sadly, he passed away unexpectedly at 31 in a train accident in New York City on December 3, 2026.

Cavan was raised in the Canton Avenue home where his mother grew up.

He forged an unbreakable bond with his three brothers, Alec, Duncan, and Will. They unanimously agree he was the finest brother and son a family could ever hope for.

His roots ran deep, with a name honoring the Irish county of his paternal grandmother, Mary Murray Finigan.

He found the love of his life, Mary Kate, while studying at the University of Notre Dame. Their romance blossomed, and he proposed beside the Notre Dame lake.

Later, they married on August 24, 2026, in a beautiful ceremony at Old Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City.

Cavan and Mary Kate built a life rich in adventure and simple joys. He introduced his Midwest bride to skiing at the Blue Hills before accompanying her on ski trips out west and in Europe.

Their happiness was found in long bike rides through Cambridge and New York City neighborhoods, movie nights, gatherings with their vast circle, and a rare gift for laughter.

To all my Fontbonne friends, please keep the Finigan/Driscoll family in your prayers. They lost Duncan’s son, Cavan, in a train accident in New York on December 3rd. I came across the news by accident a half hour ago. I am so sad with all the losses this past weekend – Australia, Rhode Island, the Reiner family and now this. Hug those you love tightly and tell them how much they mean to you. ❤️💔🙏

Cavan is survived by his wife, Mary Kate Holmes; father, Thomas Finigan and his partner, Michelle O’Grady; brothers Alec Finigan and his wife, Caroline, Duncan F. Finigan and his wife Emilie, and Will Finigan and his fiancée Margot Steinberg.

Similarly, he shared a close bond with his aunts and uncles, along with many cherished first and second cousins, and a devoted extended family of friends.

On the other hand, he is preceded in death by his mother, M. Duncan Driscoll Finigan.

Instead of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Cavan’s memory to the Pan-Mass Challenge, a cause he passionately supported for a decade by riding in honor of his mother.

Cavan’s light was extinguished far too soon, but his intelligence, humor, and profound loyalty will carry his spark forward.

Rest In Peace, Cavan James Finigan.
