Former Wheeling Park Principal and West Liberty State College athlete, Mr. Burial “Bo” Holmes Died, Leaving Wife and Sons Shattered!

He became the first Black varsity athlete at West Liberty University in the early 1960s.

A beloved husband, father, grandfather, athlete, and Hall of Famer, Burial “Bo” Holmes, passed away peacefully at home on October 10, 2026, at the age of 86.

Bo is survived by his wife of 56 years, Yolanda Holmes, and their loving children, Christopher Holmes Struthers and Bruce Holmes.

Bruce, Bo’s son, shared a on Facebook, mourning his father’s passing and highlighting the many accomplishments Bo achieved throughout his life as an educator, athlete, and in other roles.

Chris Stocker posted on behalf of his wife, Michele Namack, sharing how deeply Bo influenced her life, writing:

The honest truth. My wife (Michele Namack) and I were having dinner on Saturday night and I asked her after 35 years of marriage, “what was the most pivotal moment in your youth that changed the pattern of your life?” Beside Jesus of course
She said “when Mr Holmes called me into his office and gave me the greatest encouragement ever spoken to me in my 17 years of life”. It’s no coincidence. Thank God for men like Mr Holmes. Game changers. May he rest in His peace.

Likewise, Christina Leighton Amie called him a father figure, writing:

Mr. Holmes was my assistant principal (Class of 85)…I remember him being tough but fair with all the students. For some of us he was the father figure that was lacking in the home. I could talk to him about anything. RIP Mr. Holmes you will be missed but never forgotten.

He was a proud grandfather to his grandchildren, Dominique Holmes and Demetrius Holmes. Similarly, he also adored his great-grandchildren, Zhai Holmes and Sanaa Holmes.

Bo also leaves behind several siblings: Clair Mae Holmes, Sandra McCurry, Gerald Holmes, and Geraldine Blair.

The former athlete Bo was preceded in death by his parents, Burial Holmes and Dorothy Jackson Holmes, and his sister, Joanne Adkins.

Born on May 9, 1939, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, Bo was a multifaceted individual. He was an educator, an athlete, a soldier, and a family man.

He spent much of his career working for Ohio County Schools, where he retired as a respected Principal Administrator.

Before his career in education, Bo served in the United States Air Force.

Similarly, Bo was also a pioneer in sports. In the early 1960s, he became the first Black varsity athlete at West Liberty State College, now known as West Liberty University.

As a defensive tackle, he earned the title of West Liberty’s first NAIA All-American in football in 1961. He also excelled in track and field, earning All-WVIAC honors.

It was his athletic achievements that broke racial barriers and opened doors for future generations.

In 1992, West Liberty University honored his contributions by inducting him into their Hall of Fame.

After his military service, Bo returned to West Liberty to finish his education. He went on to become a teacher, coach, and principal in Wheeling, West Virginia.

Bo believed strongly in the power of education and worked tirelessly to encourage young people to work hard and stay focused.

In fact, his impact as an educator was so significant that the OVAASA Burial “Bo” Holmes Award was created to honor retired educators who share his values.

Following Bo’s wishes, his family will hold private services to say goodbye.

Bo also wanted to support the Wheeling Lions Club, an organization that held a special place in his heart. Those who wish to honor his memory can make donations to the Wheeling Lions Club online.

During this difficult time, we pray for the strength of Bo’s wife, kids, grandkids, friends, and extended family.
