Emmary Sweeney, a Georgetown University Women’s lacrosse player, passed away untimely due to severe illness related to her heart in September 2026.

She was rushed to the hospital on December 17, 2026, and had multiple heart surgeries.

Emmary Sweeney was the kind of athlete every coach dreamt of having on their team. She was a dynamic and well-rounded lacrosse player who excelled in any position on the field.

Her versatility was her greatest strength, and she thrived in the center of the action. She quickly said yes whenever her team needed a defender. The most important thing for her was being on the field and contributing, regardless of the role.

Moreover, Sweeney was a master of the draw and loved the game’s strategic approach.

She expertly mixed up her approach, sometimes placing the ball perfectly for her teammates and other times using her height to win self-draws.

Her exceptional stick skills, high game IQ, and sharp field awareness made her a playmaker. She had a unique talent for feeding the offense and creating great plays as part of a team.

Community Rallies Around Emmary Sweeney After Multiple Heart Surgeries

Emmary Sweeney’s heart health was improving under doctors’ care, but she was rushed to the hospital on December 17, 2026.

Since then, the young patient has undergone multiple heart surgeries.

Sweeney’s parents, Kevin and Julie Sweeney, have remained constantly at her side in the hospital so she is never alone.

She spent seven weeks in the ICU and moved to the step-down unit. Her following procedure was a hand surgery to address an issue from her first cardiac event with the IV.

Afterwards, he was moved to a rehab facility to regain her physical strength.

April Carroll started a to support the family during this difficult time. It aimed to allow Kevin and Julie to focus solely on Sweeney’s recovery by alleviating financial stresses.

Similarly, Debbie McQuaid organized a in January 2026 to help the Sweeney family.

The community’s support continued to provide crucial comfort and help to the Sweeneys when they needed it most.

Emmary Sweeney’s Family Mourns The Tragic Loss

Emmary Sweeney was a beacon of light, strength, and indomitable spirit, who left the world far too soon. Her body is finally at rest after a courageous and public battle with a complex heart condition.

The daughter of Kevin and Julie, Sweeney was a gift from the moment she was born. She exhibited a passion for life that was both infectious and inspiring from a young age.

Her profound passion found its ultimate expression on the lacrosse field, earning her the esteemed position of midfielder for the Georgetown University Women’s Lacrosse team.

Sadly, Sweeney faced a challenge greater than any opponent she had ever met on the field.

She endured multiple open-heart surgeries with bravery but never lost her signature smile or her concern for others. She allowed her harrowing ordeal to become public and taught to be strong.

The draw specialist was more than an athlete. She was a devoted daughter, a loyal friend, a dedicated student, and a pillar of her communities.

As the news spreads of Emmary’s passing, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on all of the great times we were able to spend with her on and off of the field. Emmary will always be remembered by her M&D family not only as a talented player but an exceptional teammate and even better friend. Heaven got a good one 🪽 ❤️

Sweeney approached every aspect of her life with the same tenacity and poise she had shown in her final days. Her memory will forever be a blessing to her grieving parents.

Moreover, she leaves behind a wide circle of extended family, teammates, coaches, and friends who are forever changed by her love and courage.

The Sweeney family extends their deepest gratitude to the medical teams who fought so valiantly alongside Emmary, and to the entire Georgetown University community for its overwhelming support and love.

They will soon announce a Mass of Christian Burial.
