High School Football Chaos: Vicksburg vs. Yazoo City Ends Early After Third-Quarter Fight

What began as a dominant 35–0 lead for Vicksburg turned into a night of chaos both on and off the field.

A homecoming football game between Vicksburg High School and Yazoo City came to an abrupt end Friday (September 22, 2026) night after a third-quarter fight on the field erupted into chaos, followed by a separate disturbance in the stands.

The trouble began midway through the third quarter, with Vicksburg leading 35-0.

Vicksburg’s Michael Johnson intercepted a pass and sprinted 45 yards toward the end zone.

Near the 10-yard line, a Yazoo City player grabbed Johnson by the face mask and slammed him to the ground, causing his head to hit the turf.

The aggressive tackle immediately ignited tempers, drawing in several players from both teams.

Five Vicksburg players and an undisclosed number from Yazoo City were ejected.

The fight occurred on the Gators’ sideline, and several VHS players left the bench area — an action that could result in additional discipline under high school sports rules.

With tensions running high, Yazoo City head coach Justin Washington requested the game be stopped with 5:07 left in the third quarter to prevent further incidents.

Officials did not immediately clarify whether the result would be recorded as a forfeit, no contest, or a win for Vicksburg.

Vicksburg head coach Christopher Lacey expressed frustration with his team’s conduct.

“We shouldn’t act like that. We shouldn’t clear the sideline. Let the coaches deal with that,” Lacey said.

“Even if somebody else sparks it, we’ve got to have enough composure to not do that. I’m very disappointed in the whole situation.”

But the night’s disruptions were not confined to the field. As fans exited Memorial Stadium, panic broke out near the home entrance along Lee Street after a separate fight was reported.

Witnesses described people running through the bleachers to avoid the commotion.

Another altercation occurred near the VHS band hall, about 200 yards from the stadium.

Vicksburg Police Chief Penny Jones confirmed that officers responded to two separate postgame fights.

One juvenile was arrested for fighting and marijuana possession, while others fled the scene. Police do not believe the altercations outside were connected to the player fight.

The evening had begun with celebration as Vicksburg High crowned Aiji Rader as homecoming queen at halftime.

However, the postgame homecoming dance was canceled due to the events and rescheduled for September 29 in the school gym.

Lacey summed up the disappointment shared by many.

“It was a good night, homecoming, we were playing a good game … it’s just unacceptable. We haven’t had anything like this happen in years. We’ve got to be better.”

Vicksburg will have a bye next week before facing Neshoba Central on October 6, but several key players will be sidelined due to the automatic suspensions that come with ejections
