A woman was filmed being harassed for cheering in Spanish during the Indiana-Purdue game at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette on Nov. 28, 2026.
The clip, recorded by a bystander and shared widely on social media, shows a man telling her English is the international language and saying, “You are going to get deported,” and threatening to call ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement).
The woman replies calmly, “I’ll hype my team en inglés o en español, whichever one annoys you most,” then returns to cheering.
The incident happened during a high-profile rivalry game that ended in a 56-3 Indiana win. The victory completed Indiana’s first perfect 12-0 regular season and secured a Big Ten title game berth.
Ross-Ade drew roughly 59,800 fans, and the packed, raucous crowd made every shouted insult and clapback impossible to miss.
Cold kickoff conditions did nothing to quiet the stands, and the stadium atmosphere helped the exchange get filmed by multiple people.
On the field, Indiana outgained Purdue about 548 yards to 282 and dominated time of possession.
The lopsided score and national attention meant reactions in the stands spread fast across social feeds.

Social media reaction was swift and overwhelmingly critical of the harasser. Dr. Cole wrote that the moment is not isolated and called it “the toxic ripple of a politics that normalizes xenophobia,”.
He also praised the woman’s clapback as “pure American grit” and a reminder that the nation’s strength includes every language shouted in unity.
Todric Kam Koenig added that “people who only speak one language can only think in one language,” and Lilie Allen warned against forcing others to accommodate ignorance.
Paul Manna pushed back on the idea that speaking another language means someone does not know English, calling it “a big MAGA fallacy” and noting that bilingualism is common worldwide.

A few voices framed the exchange as free speech, but many observers said invoking immigration enforcement as a threat crosses a clear line into intimidation.
Stadium officials are responsible for crowd safety, and critics say threats referencing immigration enforcement should be taken seriously and addressed by security and university authorities.
The clip has reignited debate about fan conduct at rivalry games and how quickly a shouted insult can become a national conversation.
