Author Danni Andrew took to her Facebook page to share a couple of stories that carry a gentle lesson about how things can change so much after high school.
Many years ago, Danni worked as an administrative assistant at a gas plant northeast of a small town in New Mexico.
Her days were busy helping the plant foreman and the maintenance foreman while also keeping the warehouse stocked with all the nuts, bolts, fittings, and parts the maintenance crew needed.
She knew that even half an hour of downtime could cost the company thousands of dollars, so she stayed on top of ordering regular supplies to keep everything running smoothly.
It was one ordinary afternoon, and a salesman walked in hoping to sell some parts. They started talking, and right away his name sounded familiar to her, though she never let on that she knew it.
Author Danni recognized him; he was the captain of the football team back when she was in high school.
Danni then revealed that she had never been part of the popular crowd and worked every Friday night, so she never went to games and never crossed paths with him socially. Hence, he had no idea who she was either.
She said the man looked desperate. He told her he had not made a single sale in 3 months and begged her to buy anything from his catalog because he was afraid of losing his job.
He had a wife, kids, and to make matters tougher, his boss was his father-in-law.
Danni wrote that if it hadn’t been for that family connection, he probably would have been let go long before.

Danni truly didn’t need the thing he was offering, so she had to send him away empty-handed. Still, the whole encounter stayed with her.
She said that the big high-school star, the one everyone admired back then, is now struggling just to keep a paycheck coming in.
It showed her that the popularity and confidence from her teenage years don’t always carry over into grown-up life.
A different memory came back to her later when she was working at the main office.
One time, Danni stepped into the elevator one afternoon, and two men got on with her. One of them was tall, very handsome, and there was something about him that felt familiar, though she couldn’t place it at first.
They got off on an earlier floor. As the doors opened, he smiled, nodded politely at her, then turned to the others and said, “Let’s go boys.” That voice and that smile hit her all at once.
She realized this confident man was the skinny little guy from her senior class, the one everyone called the runt and picked on without mercy.
Danni understood bullying because she had been through it too.

In their senior year, they had taken a life-skills class that included learning to budget, pay fake bills, balance a checkbook, and even plan a pretend wedding.
Nobody wanted to be paired with the bullied kids, so the teacher assigned Danni and this boy to be a fake husband and wife. They had worked together quietly through the whole project, two people who did not fit in, trying to get through the assignment.
Seeing him now, tall and sure of himself, made her stop and think.
The boy who had been teased constantly had grown into someone impressive and successful, while the football captain was the one begging for a sale to save his job.
Danni’s simple message at the end was clear: maybe give the quiet ones, the geeks, the people who don’t stand out in high school, a real chance cause they might just surprise you later.
