Kelly Hultgren, a retired American ice hockey defenseman, passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2026. He had started hospice, and his son, Kyler, took the first plane up to be with his dad a few weeks ago.

On July 2, he had to be given CPR twice, and the damage was too much. Afterwards, their world changed forever.

Kelly Hultgren may not have reached the NHL, but he built a solid professional career across multiple minor leagues in the 1990s and early 2000s. He was renowned for his offensive contributions from the blue line.

Similarly, he was a consistent and respected presence on every team he played for.

Hultgren is originally from Bloomington, Minnesota, and began playing hockey at Thomas Jefferson High School before transitioning to collegiate hockey.

He played for St. Cloud State University in the early 1990s, developing his skills as a reliable two-way defenseman.

Before turning pro, he also competed in the United States Hockey League (USHL) with the Omaha Lancers from 1989 to 1991.

Hultgren played in several minor leagues, including the ECHL, UHL, WCHL, and IHL. One of his most notable stints was with the Elmira Jackals during the 2000–01 season.
