Charles “Charlie” Porterfield, the acclaimed head football coach of Kettle Run High School and 2026 Class 3 Coach of the Year, has officially resigned from Fauquier County Public Schools.
Superintendent Major Warner confirmed the sudden news during a school board meeting on Monday, July 14.

The resignation follows months of administrative leave, imposed in early March, and comes amid an unsettling backdrop of criminal investigation involving assistant coach Bobby Hix, who was arrested in June on serious charges involving solicitation of explicit content from minors.
Warner announced, without elaborating further on the decision.
Charles Porterfield has tendered his resignation from Fauquier County Public Schools effective today, and we have accepted that resignation.
Charles Porterfield’s Resignation Raises Many Questions
Porterfield’s departure concludes a nine-year coaching tenure that saw Kettle Run football rise to prominence.
Under his leadership, the Cougars compiled a 75-28 record, made seven playoff appearances, and reached the state championship game twice.
Porterfield was subsequently named Class 3 Coach of the Year by the Virginia High School League.
Yet his sudden fall from grace leaves many in the community reeling, with lingering questions about whether Porterfield’s leave was connected directly to the allegations against Hix.
The scandal erupted when Gary “Robert” Hix, a 28-year-old science teacher and assistant football coach, was arrested on June 2 following a months-long investigation by the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office.
Hix was charged with using a communications system to solicit nude images from both minors and adults, primarily through Snapchat.

Court documents suggest that Hix engaged in grooming behavior with multiple minors, all of whom were students at Kettle Run.
His bond was denied, and he remains in custody, with a status hearing scheduled for July 28.
The investigation also led to the temporary suspension of Athletic Director Paul Frye, who has since returned to work following a personnel review conducted by an outside firm.
Community Frustrated With Lack Of Information
However, full details of the investigation and Porterfield’s involvement, if any, have not been disclosed by school officials.
The lack of transparency has sparked anger and confusion within the Kettle Run community.
Parents, students, and former players have expressed deep frustration with school leadership, many of whom spoke during recent school board meetings to voice support for Porterfield.
One former player during public comment said,
“He built this program and gave these kids a sense of pride and purpose. We deserve to know the full story.”
In the wake of the upheaval, the school division named Delmar Christian as head coach for the 2026 football season.
Christian, a longtime employee of the district since 2003, has spent 17 years involved in high school athletics and was previously tapped as interim coach during Porterfield’s leave.
The district also held a community meeting earlier this month to address parent concerns regarding Hix’s arrest and its impact on school trust and safety.
While Porterfield has not been charged with any crimes and no official misconduct has been publicly attributed to him, the opacity surrounding his administrative leave and eventual resignation only fuels speculation.
For now, the coach is enjoying his life with his family, wife Katie Jefferson Porterfield, married in 2012, and a daughter.
