La Vernia, Texas — JV Football Player Attacked During Game, Parents Outraged at Delayed Response

A shocking incident at a JV football game between La Vernia High School and Beeville has ignited outrage among parents, players, and community members after a La Vernia player allegedly assaulted a Beeville athlete during play.
The violent altercation, which was caught on video, has prompted widespread criticism over the referees’ delayed response and calls for disciplinary and legal action.
During the Thursday night game, witnesses say a La Vernia player struck a Beeville athlete—identified as Keagan—with his helmet after the play had ended.
Parents and spectators claim the referees took too long to intervene, allowing the assault to escalate.
Heather Rae Rodriguez, who was present at the game, posted a video online showing the incident and expressed anger over the officials’ response.
“Refs took FOREVER to even help him! The kid was ejected. He has NO business on the field for the rest of high school if you ask me! DO BETTER!!!” she .
Her post quickly gained traction, drawing hundreds of comments from outraged parents and community members.
Many called the act “disgusting,” with some urging school officials and law enforcement to take immediate action.
Keagan’s mother, Nicole Voelkel, confirmed that her son suffered a concussion and contusions and was treated in the emergency room following the attack.
“A La Vernia football player assaulted my son with a deadly weapon. We’re in the ER now waiting for CT and X-rays,” Voelkel .
Hours later, she updated supporters saying,
“Keagan is home resting and is ok for the most part. He suffered a concussion and contusions to his forehead and hairline. Thank you all for your kind words, prayers and support.”
Her post was flooded with prayers, support, and calls for justice. Many parents echoed her frustration, arguing that such violent conduct has no place in school sports.
The incident has stirred strong reactions across South Texas.
“South Texas Bloodsport,” Rodriguez commented bitterly under her viral post, criticizing the environment that allows such aggression in youth sports.
Parents like Virginia Brumley demanded serious consequences:
“Press charges and get that little [player] permanently off the field! Can’t control your emotions—you have no business on that field!”
The Valley Nation youth sports organization also issued a statement condemning the violence, emphasizing that such behavior violates the core values of athletics.
“No form of violence or disrespect should be tolerated. Athletes are expected to conduct themselves with integrity, sportsmanship, and respect for their opponents at all times,” the statement .
They urged young athletes to remember that sportsmanship matters and that emotional control defines true competitiveness.
J.R. Castillo, a UT Austin Sport Management Law instructor who witnessed the incident, weighed in on the legal and ethical implications:
“Football is violent within the rules, not outside them. What happened in that video is not a hard-hitting football play—it’s a deliberate strike after the action is over.”
Castillo explained that once a player acts outside the rules of play, legal protections end, opening the door to disciplinary, civil, and even criminal consequences.
He also praised Beeville’s team for maintaining discipline instead of retaliating, calling it “the toughest thing in that stadium last night.”
As the video continues to circulate online, the La Vernia Independent School District and the University Interscholastic League (UIL) are under mounting pressure to take formal action.
Parents have called for the offending player’s permanent suspension and for referees to be held accountable for their slow intervention.
While Keagan is now recovering at home, the emotional impact of the incident lingers.
Many see it as a wake-up call for schools, coaches, and officials to reexamine how safety and sportsmanship are enforced on the field.
“The hit is over,” Castillo said. “The consequences are not.”
As of now, neither La Vernia ISD nor Beeville ISD has released an official statement detailing disciplinary measures or potential legal consequences.
However, parents and community members continue to urge the University Interscholastic League (UIL) to review the footage and take swift action to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Local authorities are reportedly aware of the situation, and discussions about possible assault charges have surfaced across social media.
Meanwhile, both schools are expected to cooperate in reviewing the incident to determine accountability and ensure player safety moving forward.
For now, the community remains united in support of Keagan and his family, demanding justice and stronger protections for student-athletes across Texas.
