When longtime Rockledge City Councilman, educator, and Brevard County leader Dr. Joe Lee Smith passed away on September 1, 2026, at age 89, he left behind not only a remarkable public legacy but also a deeply personal one anchored by his wife of 63 years, Altamese Edmonson Smith.
Dr. Smith married Altamese Edmonson in the early 1960s, beginning a union that lasted more than six decades.

Dr. Smith is survived by Altamese, their two children, two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

One of their daughters, Trina Smith Lawton, passed away after a battle with illness.
She was a graduate of Rockledge High School and Brevard Community College, continuing the family’s legacy in local education.
Despite such hardships, Altamese and Dr. Smith remained resilient, holding firmly to their faith and commitment to family.
Faith and service guided much of the couple’s life together. Dr. Smith served as a Sunday School Teacher Emeritus, participated on usher boards, and mentored youth, roles that reflected the shared values he and Altamese instilled in their family.
Altamese’s quiet but enduring presence supported these efforts, ensuring their household remained a source of strength and encouragement.
While Dr. Joe Lee Smith will be remembered for his achievements as an educator, leader, and community builder, his marriage to Altamese Edmonson Smith stands as a vital part of his legacy.
