Audun Grønvold, a celebrated Norwegian skier and 2010 Olympic bronze medalist in ski cross, has tragically passed away at the age of 49 after being struck by lightning.

The Norwegian Ski Federation confirmed the heartbreaking news on Wednesday.

Grønvold was struck during a cabin trip last Saturday, part of a summer vacation with his family.

Although he was quickly transported to a hospital and received medical care, he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday night.

Audun Grønvold Had A Storied Career In Skiing

Before moving into freestyle and ski cross, Grønvold was a member of Norway’s alpine skiing team.

He had a World Cup podium finish in 1999 with a third-place finish in a downhill race in Sierra Nevada, Spain.

His transition to ski cross proved immensely successful as he won bronze at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, the first time ski cross was featured in the Games.

That moment marked a historic podium for Norway as he edged into third after Canadian competitor Christopher Del Bosco crashed in the final.

Grønvold’s accomplishments also include a bronze medal at the 2005 FIS Freestyle World Championships and capturing the overall Ski Cross World Cup title in 2007.

Nationally, he was a multiple-time champion in both downhill and ski cross disciplines.

Following his retirement from competitive skiing, Grønvold remained deeply involved in the sport.

He served as the head coach of the Norwegian ski cross team from 2010 to 2012 and later transitioned into sports commentary and the sporting goods business.

Tove Moe Dyrhaug, president of the Norwegian Ski Federation, said,

“Norwegian skiing has lost a prominent figure, who has meant so much to both the Alpine and freestyle communities. His death leaves a huge void.”

Audun Grønvold Was A Beloved Husband And Father

Grønvold is survived by his wife, Kristin Tandberg Haugsjå, and their three children: Sanna, Selma, and William.

Kristin shared a deeply emotional tribute on Facebook, saying:

“Audun, my great love and my best friend for twenty years… today you left us. What started with a lovely summer vacation ended last Saturday with you being struck by lightning while we were out at our cabin. Although you quickly received treatment and were taken to hospital, you died from your injuries last night. Sanna, Selma, William and I will carry you with us in our hearts. The loss of you is enormous.”

Grønvold’s death has shocked the Norwegian sports community and beyond.

He was not only an Olympic medalist and national champion, but also a respected mentor and a cherished friend.

His legacy in both alpine and freestyle skiing, along with his vibrant personality and commitment to growing the sport, will be remembered for years to come.

The skiing world mourns the loss of a true legend: a competitor, coach, father, and husband who inspired a generation of athletes with his passion, talent, and heart.
