A fight and prison stint crushed former athlete Brian Gatson’s basketball dreams, but his mother’s love and advice helped him rebuild his life.

A former athlete, Brian Gatson, took to Facebook to share an appreciation post for his mother, Bridget Jordan, who has had his back at all times, whether thick or thin.

He poured his heart out in a raw and emotional post dedicated to his mother.

Likewise, he also opened up about the dreams shattered, years lost, all while being supported by his mother, whose love pulled him through his darkest days.

Growing up, Brian was a talented basketball player with big dreams. He was a basketball player in high school; however, one bad choice in his junior year changed everything.

He got into a school fight, which led to an assault charge and 12 months of probation.

Brian couldn’t attend any college or play basketball because he had less than 6 months left on probation. By the time he graduated, the probation wasn’t fully cleared, and colleges wouldn’t touch him.

In the post, he recalled how his dream of playing college basketball slipped away right before his eyes, saying, “My spirit was destroyed.

Life didn’t get easier from there. As a young child, Brian found himself in a relationship where he felt pressure to prove himself.

Hoping to win the approval of his girlfriend’s family, he joined the military. He married her, but the marriage crumbled after just three months.

Brian admitted, “We became immature, toxic & at the time it ended I was heart broken.”

When the marriage ended, Brian was lost. He left the military with an honorable discharge but spiraled into what he calls “crashing out.”

Heartbroken and searching for purpose, he turned to the streets and lost control. Later, that choice led to big trouble.

Just 4 months after leaving the military, Brian was incarcerated. He spent five years and seven months behind bars.

Those years were brutal, not just for Brian but for his mother, Bridget. He expressed his guilt because she had gone through a lot because of him, saying:

I embarrassed the woman that raised me right without a rule book and she walk every bit of that whole 5 years & 7 months with me down.

That said, Brian also applauded his mother, writing, “She’s the strongest woman I know.

While Brian faced the harsh realities of prison, like phone restrictions, solitary confinement, and mistreatment, Bridget was there through it all.

His mother, Bridget Jordan, endured sleepless nights, wondering if her son was okay. She heard the anger in his voice and his pain, who felt trapped and broken. However, she never gave up on her.

She was so strong she never gave up on me no matter if I was right or wrong she held her head high,” Brian shared. She visited him, kept money on his books, and answered every call.

Through 2,040 days of him being behind bars, Bridget reminded Brian who he was and what he could become.

I love this woman beyond words & I thank my Mother because everyone behind bars weren’t as fortunate of that luxury

One moment stands out in Brian’s memory. At his lowest point, his mother gave him a piece of advice that changed his life. She told him:

Sit down & create a vision board & when you come home execute.

Brian took her words to heart and created a plan, a five-year roadmap to rebuild his life.

His short-term 5-year goals included obtaining his CDL, starting his own dog kennel, achieving 100% approval from the VA, reaching 6 figures within 1-2 years of being home, and becoming a speaker for the prison.

Now, two years and four months after his release, Brian is proud to say he’s checked off nearly every goal.

He’s got his CDL, started his dog kennel, secured his VA benefits, and hit six figures. The only goal left is to speak at prisons, but he’s still got time.

Brian wrote that people change and grow, and sometimes it just takes someone to be consistent in believing in them. For Brian, that someone was his mom.

He then thanked his mother, “Thank you, Momma, for never giving up on me & keeping my mental free when my body was physically in bondage.

Brian then concluded his appreciation post, addressing his mother as his number one and hero, writing:

You a my #1 & a phenomenal woman. You did Great 🤎 you are appreciated & more than loved. I am nothing without you. MY sHERO MY QUEEN I LOVE YOU MOMMA 🤎
