Passing the Torch: Kasi Giovenco Steps Down After a Decade of Building East Mountain Volleyball

Kasi Giovenco, an Athletic Director and Head Volleyball Coach at East Mountain, is stepping away from the sidelines to focus on her expanding duties as the school’s athletic director.
She had led the East Mountain High School volleyball program for a decade.
Kasi Giovenco is a dedicated Physical Education Instructor at East Mountain, bringing a wealth of experience and passion to her role.
Her career in education began in the Moriarty-Edgewood School District in the Severe and Profound classroom at Route 66 Elementary.
She also shared her skills at MAS Charter School in Albuquerque, serving as a PE teacher, Athletics Director, and Reading Intervention teacher.
She was a familiar face on the sidelines for ten years, coaching volleyball at East Mountain. Her commitment to school athletics grew when she expanded her duties to become the school’s Athletic Director.
With the mid-school expansion coming, the logical thing to do so I could make sure that I’m equitably focusing on all the sports. It’s a hard scale to balance when you’re playing both roles… giving your girls what they need as a coach, but then also giving the rest of the athletics programs what they need as the AD.

After nearly a decade, Kasi Giovenco is stepping down from her role as East Mountain High School’s head volleyball coach.
The decision comes as the school prepares for a middle school expansion, which will significantly increase her administrative duties as Athletic Director.
Reaching the 10-year coaching milestone was a gratifying goal for Giovenco, and she requested one final season to achieve it.
East Mountain struggled to fill its rosters when she first took over the program.
Under her leadership, East Mountain has been completely transformed, now consistently drawing 40 to 60 athletes to tryouts each year.
She didn’t have the winningest record, but hopes her legacy is about more than wins and losses. She is proud of her team’s accomplishments, including a historic first state tournament bid following the COVID-19 shutdowns.

Last night was bittersweet. I closed a chapter of my life to ensure another chapter could continue, and I could give it the best I had. Coaching volleyball gave me my place here at East Mountain and in NM. After 10 years, I’ve made the difficult decision in stepping down and handing what I’ve built over to the 2 best coaches I could leave my program to. It’s not goodbye, and it’s not me walking away. It’s me believing in what I’ve built and knowing it’s going to do big things even with me on the sidelines. Thank you, EMHS volleyball, for an amazing decade of memories.

A smooth transition is underway for the East Mountain High School volleyball program.
As longtime leader Kasi Giovenco moves entirely into her role as Athletic Director, she is passing the torch to two trusted colleagues.
Claire Rose, the current junior varsity coach who has been with the program for seven years, is stepping up as the new varsity head coach.
Ricky Garma, the C-team coach of five years, is taking over the JV squad.
Giovenco expressed supreme confidence in her successors and stated that this internal promotion ensures the program’s culture remains strong.
We feel really comfortable in handing off. They know what I expect out of the program. We all had different coaching styles, which I think is what helped us balance the program so well.
Giovenco hopes to be remembered as a coach who was there for her athletes “24/7, 365,” citing the lifelong relationships with former players.
While she will now focus on her expanded administrative duties, she will still be a familiar face on the sidelines at home games, watching as the program she built continues to thrive under its new leaders.
