The community is mourning the tragic death of 18-year-old Aaliyah Martin, who passed away on Saturday, September 13th, in a car accident while attending William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
Aaliyah had just begun her first month of college and was full of dreams for her future.
Aaliyah received a sports scholarship to attend William Penn, where she planned to pursue nursing.
Known for her bright smile and uplifting spirit, she touched countless lives both on and off the wrestling mat.
Her family her as someone who “lit up the room wherever she was,” a young woman whose energy and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
Her parents, Shantell, Chase, and Kevin, are devastated by the loss. They are now working to bring Aaliyah home to Wyoming for her funeral.
A family fundraiser, organized by Rex Verley, is helping cover the costs of transporting her back home and honoring her life.
The wrestling community also grieves deeply. Carlsbad High School Wrestling, where Aaliyah once competed as a Cavegirl, released a heartfelt statement mourning her loss.
“Once a Carlsbad wrestler, always a Carlsbad wrestler,” Joicis Ornelas, recalling her determination and fighting spirit during state competitions.
Family friend Dallas Rubalcaba shared how painful it feels to lose Aaliyah, the bond with his goddaughter “like losing your own child.”
He promised she would remain forever in their hearts. Others, like Kayla Putnam, described Aaliyah as “outgoing, amazing, and full of life,” expressing disbelief at the cruel loss of someone so young and full of promise.
Aaliyah’s death has left a void in her family, her friends, and the broader community that watched her grow into a young woman with ambition and resilience.
While grief weighs heavily on those she left behind, many hold onto the belief that heaven has gained a beautiful angel.
Her loved ones promise that her memory will live on through the joy, laughter, and determination she shared during her short but impactful life.
