Marshall Thomas, the longtime basketball coach for Saginaw High School, passed away at the age of 79 on Monday, November 17, 2026.

He joined Saginaw Public Schools in 1972 and served in multiple roles, including teacher, counselor, and administrator, throughout his career.

The Saginaw Public School District will forever honor a local legend by naming the gymnasium at the former Saginaw High School after .

Coach T was a beloved figure who shaped countless young lives, led the Saginaw High Trojans boys’ basketball team from 1982 to 2004, and taught math.

His record was extraordinary, including over 400 wins, nine league titles, and the 1996 state championship. However, his impact went far beyond trophies.

In the school halls, he was a counselor, a disciplinarian, and a role model. Likewise, he was a family man in the community.

Marshall O. Thomas was born in 1947 in Saginaw, Michigan.

He was a beloved coach, mentor, and family man who passed away, leaving a legacy that touched literally thousands of individuals throughout this nation.

Marshall was a pillar of his community and a source of steadfast support for all.

He was always the calming force and the encourager when others experienced alienation and direct racism. His quiet strength and unwavering belief in justice and human dignity provided a safe harbor and a guiding light for many.

Moreover, his life was a powerful lesson in resilience and purpose.

He inspired others through his responsibilities without hesitation to do more, dream more, and become more. He led not by command, but by profound example.

Coach Marshall Thomas (Coach T) is on the Mount Rushmore of coaching, mentorship, and leadership. He impacted and poured into the lives of so many, and I consider myself blessed to have known him. My heartfelt condolences to the family. Take your rest, sir. 🖤💛

The roles Marshall cherished most were those within his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a doting grandfather.

He is survived by his beloved daughter, Natalijia S. Thomas, who was born on October 25, 1979. His love for his family was the cornerstone of his life, and the values he instilled in them will remain his enduring gift.

Natalijia is proud of her father and calls him a hero. Marshall and his wife celebrated their 52nd Anniversary in August 2026.

Daddy, you wanted us all to be at peace and have comfort in your transition. You said that was the only way it was going to work on Friday. But I’m struggling and trying so hard. It’s not easy. 💔💔
