The Myers Park High School community, which was in mourning after the tragic death of 25-year-old Zailan Peeler, a former student and assistant basketball coach, is experiencing sadness all over again over the sexual allegation.

Peeler, who was known for his kind-hearted nature and deep passion for basketball, died in a fatal car crash on January 24, 2026.

He graduated from Myers Park High School in 2017, where he stood out as a 6-foot-3 shooting guard on the varsity basketball team.

His talent earned him a college basketball scholarship.

Though he never made it to the NBA, Zailan remained committed to the sport, returning to his alma mater to mentor the next generation of athletes as an assistant coach.

The Fatal Crash: What Happened?

On the morning of January 24, Zailan was driving home around 4 a.m. when tragedy struck.

He was not wearing a seatbelt, and his SUV veered off the road, tumbling down a 100-foot embankment before hitting multiple trees.

Officials report there were no skid marks, no attempt to brake, and the impact caused severe blunt force injuries to his head, neck, and torso.

He died instantly, and medical examiners ruled the crash a suicide.

Allegations Surface Hours Before His Death

Just hours before the fatal crash, reports surfaced that a 31-year-old woman had accused Zailan of sexual assault, claiming the incident occurred while she was asleep.

While the full details of the allegation remain unclear, sources indicate that Zailan was aware of the accusation before his death.

In a heartfelt message, Myers Park High School expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their beloved coach:

“Many of you know Zailan as a kind, caring, and dedicated person, and we send our deepest condolences to his family and friends during this incredibly tough time. Please keep Zailan’s loved ones in your thoughts and prayers. Our coaches and counselors are available to support students and staff.”

Zailan Peeler’s death has left the Charlotte community stunned.

While the sexual assault allegations cast a shadow over his final hours, many remember him as a passionate mentor and loyal friend.

His sudden passing serves as a painful reminder of the complex and often hidden struggles people face.
