The community mourns the heartbreaking loss of 15-year-old Chanelle Alvarez, whose life was tragically cut short in a shooting at her own home early Saturday morning.
Friends and family describe her as a bright, spirited, and fiercely loyal young girl whose laughter and kindness touched everyone around her.
Chanelle’s family shared a heartfelt tribute, her as “full of life — funny, brave, and deeply caring for those she loved.”
They recalled her mischievous smile, her unwavering courage, and her dreams for the future.
“She had so many dreams ahead of her…we all believed she was going to do amazing things,” her family said.
Police that officers were called to a home near 3600 Jackson Avenue at 2:58 a.m. on October 18, 2026.
A witness inside the home stated that he was awakened by several distant gunshots, followed by a single shot that sounded close.
When checking on his children, the witness encountered 16-year-old Hezekiah Plummer, who was holding a gun and mentioned a “robbery” before fleeing the home.
Chanelle’s mother told authorities that Plummer, her daughter’s boyfriend, arrived at the home around 1 a.m., claiming he had nowhere to stay.
The mother said the two were in Chanelle’s bedroom when she left for work at about 2:40 a.m.
A Glock handgun that the mother had purchased weeks earlier was missing after the shooting, and its box was found in Chanelle’s room.
Investigators recovered one shell casing inside the home and several more in the street nearby.
Police later located Plummer in Davis County, carrying a backpack with several ounces of marijuana and more than $4,000 in cash. He refused to be interviewed.
Authorities charged Plummer with murder in connection with Chanelle’s death.
Detectives noted that Plummer had previously lived in the home, qualifying him as a cohabitant, and was not permitted to possess a firearm.
Police also allege that removing the weapon after the shooting constitutes obstruction of justice.
The firearm believed to be used in the shooting remains missing, and the investigation is ongoing.
Chanelle’s family is currently raising funds to cover funeral and memorial expenses, as well as therapy support for those closest to her.
A funeral date has not been set, but the family promises updates so loved ones can honor her memory.
In a public statement, they asked for privacy during this difficult time and expressed gratitude for the support they have received.
“Every donation, prayer, and share means more than you know,” the family said.
“Chanelle was deeply loved by so many…her spirit will live on through the laughter she gave us, the love she showed, and the strength she inspired.”
Chanelle’s community, friends, and family continue to celebrate her life by sharing memories and photos, keeping her vibrant spirit alive.
