Gary Anderson, a former basketball coach at Westby High School, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 83 on Monday, October 6, 2026.
He spent most of his career as a beloved teacher, and it was his calling.
Gary Anderson was a proud graduate of Carpenter High School’s Class of 1960 and dedicated his life to education and mentoring young people.
His educational journey continued at Winona State University, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education.
Teaching wasn’t just a profession for Gary, but it was his true calling. He spent the majority of his career teaching business education at Westby High School.
Moreover, his impact extended far beyond the classroom, as he served as the boys’ basketball coach for both the JV and Varsity teams for many years.
He mentored countless student-athletes with enthusiasm and dedication, sharing his love for the game and imparting valuable life lessons.
Gary Anderson’s Family Mourns the Tragic Loss
Gary Anderson, the son of Harvey and Veronica “Ronnie” Anderson, was born on August 28, 1942, in Osage, Iowa. His parents raised him in a close-knit family in Carpenter, Iowa.
He was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, as well as a former basketball coach, who passed away unexpectedly at his home.
Gary moved to Westby, and his life was changed forever when he met Sharon Sieber.
They built a family raising three children, Lisa (Paul) Kabat, Brian (Melanie) Anderson, and Sara Anderson.
The married couple went their separate ways, but maintained a cherished friendship. They continued to share family time and remained a meaningful part of each other’s lives.
Moreover, Gary was a devoted family man, and his legacy lives on through his children and his six grandchildren: Tanner, Isabella, Arianna, Madison, Elise, and Tyler, who passed away in 2026.
He loved golf and shared that passion with his kids and grandkids. He was an avid outdoorsman in his earlier years and often found biking, running, or staying active outdoors.
Furthermore, Gary’s siblings, Keith Anderson, Marilyn Anderson, Patricia Anderson, and Ann (Dennis) Christensen, along with his niece, Kathy LaRue, and nephew, Kevin (Tracie) Christensen, as well as many great-nieces and nephews, survive him.
He cherished family game nights, gatherings, and his regular breakfast chats with “the boys” at Borgen’s Café.
The former basketball coach will be remembered for his gentle heart, his easygoing smile, and his constant willingness to help others. His kindness was a quiet, steady force in the lives of his family and friends.
He selflessly cared for his daughter, Sara, helping her through her recovery after a serious medical event. He was the kind of person who made life better just by being there.
Gary will be remembered as the best dad, grandpa, brother, and friend, whose love, humor, and quiet strength left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him.
The Anderson family has announced a prayer service and celebration of life for Gary on Saturday, October 11, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Vosseteig Funeral Home in Westby, with Matt Marshall officiating.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service.
The former basketball coach will be deeply missed and forever loved.
