Washington Junior Football League Coach, Edwin John Sprague AKA Sonny Dies At 88 Leaving Behind His Wife June Sprague And Five Children

Edwin John “Sonny” Sprague, who coached youth football at the Washington Junior Football League, died on Monday.

Sprague was a skilled tradesman who started his career in brick and concrete work. He grew up in Toledo and attended Whitmer High School.

Later, he proudly in mechanical engineering and retired from a management role at Dana Corporation.

John also served his country in the Army Reserve for 8 years.

He dedicated several years to coaching youth football for the Washington Junior Football League, where he also served on the commissioner’s staff.

Edwin also loved NASCAR and spent time on the sprint car circuit as part of a pit crew-always happiest when surrounded by engines, speed, and teamwork.

Over the years, he shared his home with many beloved dogs and cats and was known for rescuing injured or abandoned wildlife whenever possible.

Washington Junior Football League coach Edwin John “Sonny” Sprague took his last breath on Monday, July 21, 2026, at 88. The cause of death has not been revealed yet.

The news was on social media by Edwin’s stepson Mark Wietrzykowski.

Close friends and relatives took to the comment section, mourned the loss of Edwin, and sent prayers to his family to stay strong in this heartbreaking moment. One person wrote,

Edwin will always be remembered for his unforgettable contribution to the Washington Junior Football League as a coach.

Edwin John “Sonny” Sprague Is Survived By His Wife, June, And Five Children

Football coach Edwin John “Sonny” Sprague was married to June Sprague in 1980. They shared many cherished moments and went on trips to Arizona, Florida, and Hawaii.

June always supported and helped Edwin in balancing his personal and professional life.

According to June Sprague’s profile, she resides in Toledo, Ohio, and is a former process engineer at Dana Corporation.

Sadly, their married life ended after over 45 years following the tragic death of Edwin.

June and Edwin were blessed with three children: David, Tina, and Danny Sprague. Edwin also had two step-children: Kelly Wietrzykowski and Mark Wietrzykowski.

Their daughter, , attended Whitmer High School and later served as a registered nurse at ProMedica Health System. She tied the knot with Ty Wumer.

On the other hand, their son Danny tied the knot with Melissa Adkins on September 3, 2016. They currently reside in Lambertville, Michigan.

Edwin’s stepson Mark tied the knot with Angie Wietrzykowski on August 8, 2018.
