Wheatland Basketball Coach Chuck Courtney’s Death Saddens Vincennes and South Knox Communities

Charles “Chuck” Arthur Courtney of Vincennes, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2026, at the age of 85.
A devoted educator, coach, and family man, Chuck leaves behind a legacy that stretches far beyond the classroom and basketball court.
His death has deeply those who knew him—especially in the Wheatland and South Knox communities where he spent decades shaping young lives.
Born on April 26, 1940, Chuck was raised on a family farm near Odon, Indiana, alongside his parents and siblings.
A gifted athlete, Chuck received offers to play basketball at Butler University but chose to stay close to home, playing for Vincennes University so he could care for his family.
That choice set the tone for a life marked by devotion to others.
In 1964, Chuck married Dixie Keniepp, and together they shared 60 years of love and partnership.
They raised one daughter, Mischelle, who became the heart of their world.
Chuck worked as a teacher for 25 years at Wheatland, later part of the South Knox School Corporation.
He was not only a beloved educator but also an admired basketball and baseball coach.
Known for his spirited half-court shooting challenges in PE class—where students were spared running sprints if he missed (which he rarely did)—Chuck earned a reputation for making learning fun and memorable.
Chuck’s passion for sports extended well beyond his career. He was a loyal fan of the Indiana Pacers, Chicago Cubs, and Indiana Hoosiers, often watching games with his grandson-in-law, Seth, and great-grandson, Myles.
Known as “Papaw Chuck,” he was a dedicated grandfather to Gabrielle, Austin, and Kinleigh, and more recently, a proud great-grandfather to Myles, who brought him tremendous joy.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Dixie; daughter, Mischelle Luking; brother, Gene (Carol) Courtney; sister, Nancy Harp; grandchildren, Gabrielle (Seth) Ault, Austin Luking, Kinleigh Luking; and great-grandson, Myles.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Goldie Courtney; his brothers, Jack and Robert; and his sisters, Faye and Leola.
Visitation for Chuck will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with the funeral service following at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Mike Flynn. Burial will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Chuck Courtney will be remembered not only as a respected teacher and coach but as a man whose love for family, sports, and community never faded. His impact will continue to be felt for generations to come.
