A legendary figure in Michigan high school football, Al Fracassa, passed away on September 7, 2026, at the age of 92.
While his death was widely mourned and honored across the Michigan community, no specific cause of his passing has been publicly disclosed.
Coach Al Fracassa Led Brother Rice High School to Nine State Championships As a Head Coach During His 44-Year Tenure!
Al Fracassa was born in Detroit and grew up in a hardworking Italian-American family.
He attended Northeastern High School, where he was a standout athlete in football and baseball.
He went on to play football at Michigan State University from 1951 to 1955 and was a part of the 1952 national championship team.
Additionally, he played in the 1954 Rose Bowl, and after graduating, he served in the U.S. Army.
Then, in 1960, he began his teaching and coaching career at Royal Oak Shrine and spent the bulk of his career at Brother Rice High School in Birmingham, Michigan.
During that time, he led the football program from 1969 to 2013.
Over the course of his career, he amassed 430 wins, which made him the winningest coach in Michigan history.
After retiring, Coach Fracassa remained deeply connected to the football community.
He continued to mentor young coaches, attend games, and share life lessons with former players and students.

Coach AI Fracassa’s passing has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the entire football community.
Former players, coaches, and fans honored his record-breaking career and memory on social media.
Brother Rice High School posted a heartfelt tribute on social media describing Coach Fracassa as a cornerstone of the school, saying:
For over five decades, Coach Fracassa was much more than just a coach; he was a cornerstone of our school. With a record that ranks among the best in Michigan and nationwide, he not only built winning teams but also shaped young men. His legacy is defined not just by championships, but by the character he instilled in his players.He taught us to “do it better than it’s ever been done before” and to “do it right all the time.” Not because it was easy, but because excellence demands it.May he rest in peace. Let us honor him by practicing the values he instilled in us: hard work, integrity, and faith, both on and off the field.
Moreover, he is survived by his wife Phyllis, whom , in the seventh grade.
Later, they attended the prom together in high school and went to the same college.
Shortly after joining the U.S. Army in 1956, they married. Together, they raised four children, two sons and two daughters.
His sons, Rick (of Auburn Hills) and David (of Troy), both work as manufacturers’ representatives.
Similarly, his daughter, Susan, is a caterer based in Berlin, Germany, where she has lived for over 15 years.
His other daughter, Kathy, lives in Omaha, Nebraska, though her profession hasn’t been publicly detailed.
Additionally, he leaves behind seven grandchildren.
