Former professional baseball player and coach from Puerto Rico, Sandy Alomar Sr., has died at the age of 81, leaving behind his wife, Maria, and three children.
Alomar Sr. was a talented second baseman who played in Major League Baseball for 15 seasons.
He made his debut with the Milwaukee Braves in 1964 and went on to play for several teams, including the New York Mets, Chicago White Sox, California Angels, and Texas Rangers.
After retiring as a player, Alomar Sr. became a respected coach and instructor. He spent many years on MLB coaching staffs, especially with the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets.

He always credited his wife, Maria, for her unwavering support and for raising their children while he was away on the field.
During his time with SABR, he specifically acknowledged Maria’s role in keeping the family strong, saying;
“She deserves more credit than me. I was a ballplayer and couldn’t be around that much. She stayed home and raised those kids. That’s why they’re the kind of people they are.”
While his passing has brought grief to the Alomar family, the community and fans have expressed their support and gratitude to the family.
