Danbury Hat Tricks hockey coach Peter Gianatiempo tragically passed away this week. The team shared the sad news in a Facebook post on September 23, 2026.

Danbury Hat Tricks wrote, “The Danbury Hat Tricks organization is deeply saddened by the passing of Pete Gianatiempo.”

While extending their thoughts to Pete’s family, friends, and players whose lives he touched through the game he loved, the sports team wrote,

"Beyond the rink, Pete was a retired NYPD Detective, a 9/11 first responder, and worked in Humane Law Enforcement with the SPCA of Westchester."

According to the sports team, which is not a member of the Hudson to Hartford NY/CT hockey game, the late coach was a pillar of the Danbury hockey community.

Peter coached in their Girls Hat Tricks program and helped establish the Danbury Bravehearts Adaptive Hockey Program.

Gianatiempo had also worked with USA Sled Hockey and served as a lead instructor for the New York Rangers Learn to Play program.

Peter Gianatiempo’s Friends Have Organized a Fundraising Page To Support His Family

Following the passing of the beloved coach and former NYPD member, his family and friends have come forward to pay tributes.

Additionally, his friends from the NYPD have organized a fundraising event. Beyond The Badge NY has set up a page on FundtheFirst saying, “Support the family of Retired NYPD Detective Peter Gianatiempo.”

Out of a $40,000 goal, $12,205 has been collected with the help of 117 donations as of September 23, 2026.

Beyond The Badge NY wrote, “We are organizing this campaign to assist the family of Ret. NYPD 2nd Grade Detective Peter Gianatiempo, who left this world too soon.”

According to the story on the page, the retired detective dedicated 26 years of his life to serving in the New York City Police Department (NYPD). During his career, he earned a strong reputation and the respect of his colleagues.

He worked as a highly accomplished and decorated detective. He spent 19 years in the Organized Crime Control Bureau, which is a unit that investigates serious criminal activities.

In addition to organized crime, he also worked in various roles, including narcotics investigations. Over his career, the late hockey coach received many medals, awards, and promotions.

His friends’ words clearly show Peter’s dedication and skill in law enforcement. Furthermore, he was also a 9/11 first responder, helping during one of the most challenging times in New York City’s history.

Following the example of his father, who was also an NYPD detective, Peter served his community with pride and commitment.

Beyond his professional achievements, Peter was a loving husband, a caring father, and a devoted hockey coach who touched the lives of many players and families in his community.

Peter Gianatiempo Was Married To His Wife, Dawn

Apart from a well-decorated career, the late coach and retired detective also had a blissful marital life. He was married to his long-time spouse, Dawn.

The married couple welcomed two children, Pete and Nicole Gianatiempo, during their decades-long marriage. He was a devoted family man.

Peter loved spending time with his family, fishing, hunting, and also coaching the many children he had the pleasure of working with in hockey.

As he would say, many who crossed paths with Peter left “fingerprints on his heart.” The loss of Peter will leave a void in the lives of his wife, Dawn, his kids, his family, and anyone else who was lucky enough to call Peter a friend.

Moreover, he often shared pictures of his family on his Facebook. Peter was also very close to his nieces and nephews.

While celebrating the tenth birthday of his three young relatives, he : “Celebrating ‘The Trips’ 10th Birthday! Can’t believe you all are double digits now! Love you, Gabriella (Gabby), Matthew (Matty Matt), and Joseph (Jo Jo). Love you always, Uncle Pete 🤗😘🎉🎈🎂.”
