Trevor Merritt was a high school student and athlete at E.E. Smith High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina, who lost his life in a car accident on October 8, 2026.
On October 8, 2026, a 2026 Honda Civic carrying four individuals struck a telephone pole and collided with a tree near Rosehill Road.
This tragic incident took the lives of three high school players, Trevor Merritt (17), Nicholas Williams (17), and Jai’Hyon Lamont Elliott (18).
Cumberland County Schools is mourning the loss of three E.E. Smith High School seniors: Jai’hyon Elliott, Trevor Merritt and Nicholas Williams, who were members of the Golden Bulls Football Team.

The loss of these three young lives has not only brought grief to their families but also to the community, which has lost its future stars.
Shedding light on the incident and offering sympathy and support to the families, Mayor Mitch Colvin also issued a statement saying;
“Our heartfelt sympathies are with the family of the three young members of the E.E. Smith 1800 Family, and our prayers are for healing for the other passenger. Our community’s heart is broken. These young men were part of the Golden Bulls family and of Fayetteville’s future, and their loss is felt across our city. We are keeping the injured individual in our prayers and ask our community to join us in lifting up all who are hurting.”
While the incident took the life of three young souls, the driver, 21-year-old Dymond Monroe, was airlifted to UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill with critical injuries.

Trevor Merritt was one of three students killed in the crash.
He was a standout senior athlete at E.E. Smith High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina, excelling in football, track & field, and basketball.
He wore #11 for the varsity football team and played a key role in the Golden Bulls’ 27–24 victory over Gray’s Creek High School on September 19, 2026.
His untimely passing has deeply impacted his family, friends, and the E.E. Smith community, who remember him for his character and spirit.
While he was a football star in school,was the beloved son of Jonquil Merritt and Jamaar Merritt.
Trevor’s mother, Jonquil, is an interior designer who studies at ECPI University and works at the Charlotte Area Transit System.
His father, Jamaar Merritt, is a digital creator and currently works as a city letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.
He attended Independence High and later studied at Fayetteville State University.
The loss of their son Trevor has brought immense tragedy into their lives, and his parents are now receiving sympathy and support from those who admired him.
While many are praying for the family of Trevor, the funeral and visitation details have not yet been released, as the family is taking some time to process this tragic loss.
