Shongaloo, LA Resident and Former Negreet High School Basketball Standout, Larry Richard Arthur,73, Dies After Courageous Battle With Cancer

The Shongaloo, Louisiana, community is mourning the death of beloved resident and former athlete, Larry Richard Arthur.

Larry Richard Arthur passed away on December 21, 2026, at the age of 73, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born on September 9, 1952, in Zwolle, LA, to late parents Irene and Boston Arthur, Larry was a cherished member of the sports community and touched the lives of many with his kind nature.

Larry attended Negreet High School while growing up in Negreet, Louisiana, where he was a proud member of the varsity boys basketball team Negreet Indians, and throughout his career, he led his team in several victories.

Although Larry didn’t pursue his career in sports professionally, he continued to contribute to the Louisiana community, working in several positions.

Larry worked at Frasier Hospital as a custodian for years and was a proud employee of the LA Highway Department.

Beyond his professional life, Larry Richard Arthur was an outdoorsman and enjoyed exploring the woods and fishing, whether at the pond at his old family house or at Toledo Bend.

His love for sports was immense; he loved watching wrestling, baseball, and other sports on TV.

Likewise, Larry was an early member of Beulah Baptist Church.

The passing of Larry Richard Arthur has left a profound void in the lives of his family, friends, and loved ones. Many of his loved ones are paying tribute to the late Larry and extending their heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time.

Larry leaves behind his siblings, James Arthur of Shreveport, LA; Karen Lajune (Arthur) Smallwood of Gainesville, GA; Rhonda (Arthur) Murray and husband Troy of Coushatta, LA; Richard Arthur and wife, Kameron of Lansing, Michigan; and sister-in-law Fay Arthur of Milam, Texas, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Irene and Boston Arthur; brothers: Gary Arthur and Douglas Arthur; brother-in-law Danny Smallwood; maternal grandparents Claude and Joy Carter, and paternal grandparents Jefferson and Lula Arthur.

Larry’s family has organized a funeral service to honor him on Friday, December 26, 2026, at Beulah Baptist Church at 12 O’clock in Many, Louisiana.

A viewing and visitation will be held 2 hours before the service from 10 am to 12 pm.

Burial will be at the Beulah Cemetery with arrangements in the care of Warren Meadows Funera Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or a cause of your choice.

The Arthur family also expressed their gratitude to the Evergreen Life Services team in Webster Parish for their care in watching over Larry for the past 40 years, Minden Medical Center Oncology Department, as well as the Gentiva Hospice staff of Bossier, for making him comfortable in his last stage of life.
