Amanda Grimes, a basketball coach from New Paris, Ohio, had a motorcycle accident in 2013, and her husband’s split-second decision saved their lives when a car pulled out in front of them.
Her leg got crushed between the bike and the car, and she had over 10 surgeries to reconstruct her foot in a way that all bones were fused straight.
Amanda Grimes is a familiar and dedicated face at National Trail Local Schools, where she is a substitute teacher.
She has also been a basketball coach, sharing her knowledge and passion with students. Her long career on the court has made her an experienced leader for countless young athletes.
Moreover, her connection to school spirit extends beyond basketball.
Before her coaching career, she was also a cheerleader, showing her long-standing enthusiasm for supporting her school and team.
Had so much cheering Friday night at Alumni night! Supporting Trail in any way I can is something I take pride in. Although I feel like I embarrassed myself by not knowing all the moves (even after enlisting a small refresher course with one of my fave girls) it was beyond fun! I even got to stand on one of the new NTHS boxes!!!

In 2013, a motorcycle crash could have taken everything.
When a car pulled out in front of them, Amanda Grimes’s husband made a split-second decision that saved their lives, steering the bike to the side to avoid a head-on collision.
Amanda Grimes lives with a powerful perspective.
While the decision was lifesaving, the impact crushed Amanda’s leg, leading to a long and painful road ahead. She has since endured 16 surgeries, with at least 10 stemming from the accident.
Amanda battles chronic pain from nerve damage and a condition that causes her limbs to curl, resulting in a major foot reconstruction. She hoped to remove the pain in a year or two.
Despite the constant challenges, her spirit remains unbroken, and she refuses to stagnate. Her goal is to live an active life, support her children, and continue coaching the sports she loves.
I’m not looking for sympathy because I know I’m on the right track of living my life to how I want to. I don’t want to be stagnant (though somedays I am). I wanna be active and support my kids and coach the sports I love.
Amanda focuses on her blessings.
Working in the school allows her to be a daily inspiration to the students and athletes she coaches, showing them what it means to persevere.
Her family, supportive doctor, and the fact that her husband’s quick thinking allowed her to be there for her kids.
