Dixie Lee Ruble, a beloved volleyball coach and educator from Indianola, Iowa, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2026, at the age of 84.
Dixie’s journey in sports began at Indianola High School, where she not only excelled academically but also served as class president.
After earning her Bachelor of Science in Education from Simpson College in 1963, Dixie returned to her hometown to dedicate her life to teaching and coaching.
She became head coach of the Indianola girls’ volleyball team and assistant coach for track, helping lead the team to three consecutive state championships.
Dixie was also involved in the tradition of flag football for junior and senior high school girls during homecoming, leaving a lasting mark on the school’s athletic culture.

Born on April 17, 1941, in rural Warren County, Iowa, Dixie was the daughter of Bill and Dorothy Allen.
She was raised with strong values of faith, kindness, and service, which she carried into every aspect of her life.
Professionally, she spent decades shaping young minds and mentoring student teachers at Indianola Public School.

Additionally, she is survived by her daughter, Katherine (Katie), and son, Dr. Matthew Ruble, along with their spouses and her cherished grandchildren.
Not just her own children, she was also like a second mother to many young minds whom she educated and trained during her time.
After her passing, many have shared heartfelt messages with her family, showcasing the impact she had on their lives.
One of her students from the late 1980s wrote in her obituary comments:
I had her as a coach and educator back in the late 80s and I can still hear her and will always remember her so fondly. Prayers to her family and friends. She was one of a kind.
Remembering her lasting impact, another admirer wrote;
None better than Dixie for enthusiasm, kindness and lively conversations. She loved her family, her students, her community, and her life. Her memory will live in the hearts and minds of thousands.
A visitation will be held on Friday, October 10, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Indianola First United Methodist Church, followed by a celebration of life at 11:00 a.m.
