A tragic incident on I-25 took the lives of two soccer players, David Alexander Murguia Jr, and Diego Rubio.

Both David Alexander Jr and Diego Rubio were born in 2012.

According to the source, the players of Real Colorado’s youth soccer team arrived at their practice field on Saturday, September 27, 2026, wearing their uniforms.

But instead of competition, the day was marked by grief. They had lost two of their players.

David and Diego, both students at Prairie View Middle School, were killed on Thursday evening, September 25, 2026, in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 25 near Greenwood Village.

Their coach, David Lugo, told the boys that they were on their way to soccer practice. Lugo said,

“We’re supposed to be playing a game right now,”  “We thought that it would still be helpful to get together and to talk to each other, to support each other, together as one family, and be with each other. Just hold each other for a moment.”

He described the team as tightly knit, bound by daily sessions and a shared cultural background. He added,

“We are a big family,” “99.9% of the team is Hispanic. Having that Latino background helps us stay closer together. We practice here on this field four times a week. They’re very committed. They play at a really high competitive level. So we’re a huge family. We see each other pretty much every day.”

Jayden, another teammate, said what he will remember most about Diego is his fearlessness. He said,

“He didn’t care if someone was bigger than him or anything. He would still go for the ball,”

Eric, who often saw the boys both on and off the field, said the two were inseparable. He said,

“David would always be with him — in school, in practice, off practice,”  . “So they were like best friends.”

On Saturday, instead of their scheduled match, the players, coaches, and family members embrace each other at the field.

Additionally, Coach David Lugo has organized a fundraising campaign on to help Diego and David’s family with funeral expenses.
