For many young athletes, the dream of playing professional soccer overseas is the ultimate reward for years of hard work, sacrifice, and dedication.

For Raven Lee, a talented player from Trenton, Michigan, that dream appeared to be coming true when she received what was described as a professional soccer contract abroad, complete with promises of a steady salary, housing, and transportation.

But instead of launching her career, the opportunity became a devastating ordeal that left her stranded, unpaid, and without access to her own passport.

As per thelaunched by Lee, the move overseas began with hope and excitement.

She believed she was on the verge of changing her life and inspiring others from her community who shared the same ambitions. She wrote,

“After years of training, grinding, and sacrificing, I finally got what I thought was a life-changing opportunity—a contract to play professional soccer overseas,”

However, what awaited her on arrival was far from the professional environment she had envisioned. The club or organization that had extended the offer reportedly failed to uphold the terms of the contract.

Lee said that her promised salary was never paid, and her passport was taken under the pretense of “visa processing,” leaving her unable to leave or seek alternative employment. In the fundraiser, she explained,

“I was pressured to keep playing even though I was never paid,” “I was living off hope, faith, and whatever food I could afford.”

Over time, the situation worsened. Without financial support or access to her documents, Lee found herself trapped in unsafe and unstable conditions.

She tried to endure the hardships, clinging to her faith and determination, but soon realized that the opportunity was not legitimate and that she had been exploited.

In the campaign, Lee said her primary goal is simple but urgent: to make it home safely to her family in Denver, Colorado.

Her GoFundMe campaign seeks to raise money for emergency travel expenses, temporary food and shelter, passport and visa recovery fees, and legal or communication costs that may arise as she works to return to the United States.

Lee’s story has started circulating on social media, where supporters have expressed both sympathy and outrage.

For Lee, the campaign isn’t just about returning home; it’s about reclaiming her dignity and hope.

Despite what she’s endured, she remains determined to continue her soccer journey the right way, grounded in fairness, transparency, and respect.

She wrote,

“I’m trying to get back on my feet, continue chasing my football career the right way, and most importantly—make it home safely,”
